To convert markdown to HTML here, write or paste your markdown above and choose Export .html. You get one self-contained .html file with the document’s styles included. In that file, code blocks are not highlighted, and Mermaid diagrams and math stay as source text.
This page is for when you need an HTML file you can keep, attach or open offline: release notes for a mailing list archive, a report to attach to a ticket, documentation to drop on a shared drive. Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, block quotes, task lists and footnotes come through in the file. The example above, a set of release notes, uses only those elements, so it converts completely.
How to export markdown as HTML
- Paste or write your markdown in the editor.
- Check the result in Preview.
- Open the menu and choose Export .html.
- Open the downloaded file in any browser. It does not depend on sharemd.net or any external stylesheet.
What the HTML export includes and what it does not
Included: the rendered structure of the document and its styles, in a single file.
Not included:
- Syntax highlighting. Code blocks are in the file as monospaced text without colors.
- Mermaid diagrams. They appear as the Mermaid source code, not as drawings.
- Math. KaTeX expressions appear as the original
$...$source.
The preview on this page does render all three, so a document can look complete here and still lose its diagrams in the exported file. If your document relies on diagrams, math or highlighted code, a read link is the better format: press Share and send the read-only link, which renders everything for the reader.
Raw HTML written inside your markdown is not rendered by sharemd.net, so it will not carry through to the export as markup either. Use markdown syntax for tables, emphasis and links.
Other ways to get markdown out
- Copy Formatted copies the rendered document as rich text. Paste it into an email, a document or a chat tool that accepts formatting, without handling a file at all. This is often what people need when markdown shows up as raw symbols in a chat tool; the guide on markdown not rendering in Slack covers that case.
- Export .md downloads the original markdown, unchanged.
- Share gives a read-only link to a rendered page that expires after 15 days. See share markdown online for the details.
To check which markdown syntax is supported before converting, see the markdown renderer page.
Frequently asked questions
Does the exported HTML need an internet connection?
No. The file is self-contained, with the styles inside it, and opens in a browser without loading anything from sharemd.net.
Will my code blocks be highlighted in the HTML?
No. Highlighting appears in the preview and in shared links, but the exported file contains code blocks without colors.
Are Mermaid diagrams and math converted?
No. In the exported file they stay as their source text. To show them rendered, share a read link instead of the file.
Can I copy the HTML source instead of downloading a file?
There is no option to copy HTML source. Copy Formatted copies the rendered text as rich text, and Export .html downloads the file, which you can open in a text editor.
