Online Markdown Editor

Write markdown with syntax highlighting and keyboard shortcuts, in the browser.

This online markdown editor lets you write markdown in the browser with syntax highlighting, line numbers, undo and redo, find, and a focus mode. It is free, needs no account, and opens straight into the editor, with Share and export one click away when the text is ready.

The editor is built on CodeMirror. Markdown marks are colored as you type, so a missing closing backtick or an unbalanced emphasis is visible in the source before you look at the rendered result.

How to write and save a document

  1. Start typing in the editor above, or clear the example first.
  2. Optionally begin the file with a frontmatter block (--- lines) containing title:. That title becomes the document’s name and the block is hidden from the preview.
  3. Press Cmd/Ctrl+F to search inside the text, and Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo.
  4. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+F to hide everything except the text. Press Esc to leave focus mode.
  5. Press Cmd/Ctrl+S to save. Saving creates the document and its links.
  6. Press Share to get the links to send.

If you close the tab or reload before saving, the draft is kept in your browser’s local storage and offered back the next time you open the editor.

Editing features

Editing after you share

Share gives two links. The read-only link is for readers. The write link opens this same editor on the saved document, and anyone who has it can make changes, so give it only to the people who should edit. There is no account or permission screen behind it: the link itself is the access. Changes are saved to the same document, and the document still expires 15 days after it was first created.

When you are done writing, the text can leave the editor in three ways: share it, export it as the original .md file, or export a self-contained .html file. To write with the rendered result next to the source, see the markdown preview page. For what the recipient sees, read share markdown online. Common questions about limits and expiration are collected in the FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my text if the browser tab closes?

An unsaved draft is kept in your browser’s local storage and offered back after a reload. It stays on that device only. Saving with Cmd/Ctrl+S stores the document on sharemd.net.

Can someone else edit the same document?

Yes, through the write link. Anyone with it can edit. Edits are not merged live between people, so agree on who edits when.

How do I set the document title?

Add a frontmatter block at the top with a title: line. The title is used for the document and the block is hidden from the rendered view.

Is there a word or size limit?

Documents can be up to 500 KB. There is no separate word limit.
